Iran IRAN EXPELS RUSSIAN PILOTS
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Monday, March 08, 2010 (00:04:44) (20 reads)

Iran has given Russian commercial pilots working in the Islamic Republic two months to leave the country as it has no need for them, Transport Minister Hamid Behbahani was quoted as saying on Saturday.

The move is a further sign of strains between Iran and Russia, which has indicated it could back new sanctions against Tehran over its disputed nuclear work. For its part, Iran has voiced frustration over Moscow's failure to deliver a defense missile system.

Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency said the idea to order the Russian pilots to leave the country gained momentum after a Russian-made aircraft caught fire as it landed in northeastern Iran in January, injuring more than 40 people.

The plane belonged to Iran's Taban airline but the pilot was Russian, Fars said. It did not say how many Russians currently worked as pilots for Iranian airlines.

"Upon an order from the president (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad), the Road and Transport Ministry has set a two-month deadline, upon the expiry of which all Russian pilots will have to leave the country," Behbahani said.

Iran ISRAEL/US DIFFER ON IRAN STANCE
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, February 27, 2010 (17:52:01) (43 reads)

Israel's perspective on Iran's nuclear program differs from that of the United States, and the two may part ways on what action to take, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Friday.

Washington's clout over its Middle East ally is under scrutiny after Israel's veiled threats to attack Iran preemptively if international diplomacy fails to rein in Tehran's uranium enrichment, a process with bomb-making potential.

The United States this week said it did not want to hurt the Iranian people with "crippling" sanctions against Iran's energy sector, measures Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described as the only viable diplomatic solution.

"There is of course a certain difference in perspective and a difference in judgment and a difference in the internal clock, a difference in capabilities," Barak told the Washington Institute for Near East Policy think-tank, when asked about Israeli-U.S. discussions about Iran.

"I don't think that there is a need to coordinate in this regard. There should be understanding on the exchange of views, but we do not need to coordinate everything," said Barak, who was in Washington for strategic talks.

Iran THREATS COME AND THREATS GO
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Friday, February 12, 2010 (01:31:12) (60 reads)

Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Iran is set to deliver a "punch" that will stun world powers during this week's 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution, AFP reported.

"The Iranian nation, with its unity and God's grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman, February 11, in a way that will leave them stunned," Khamenei, who is also Iran's commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel according to AFP.

The country's top cleric was marking the occasion when Iran's air force gave its support to revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a key event which led to the toppling of the U.S.-backed shah on February 11, 1979.

His reported comments came as Iran said it would begin to produce higher enriched uranium from Tuesday, in defiance of Western powers trying to ensure the country's nuclear drive is peaceful.

This year's anniversary is expected to become a flashpoint between security forces and supporters of opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, who charge that the June re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was rigged.

Opposition supporters are expected to stage anti-government protests on Thursday when the traditional regime-sponsored marches to mark the revolution take place across the country.

Mousavi renewed his call for demonstrations on the February 11 anniversary.

Iran IRAN ISSUES WARNING
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 (02:09:20) (84 reads)

Iran's president on Wednesday warned the West to expect a "bloody nose" over mounting pressure on Iran to halt its sensitive uranium enrichment activities, state television reported.

The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany will meet on April 16 in Shanghai to discuss whether to sweeten incentives they had offered Iran in 2006 to curb its nuclear program.

In a televised address from the northeastern city of Mashhad, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted Iran would never abandon its atomic work, which the West fears is a cover to build nuclear bombs. Iran says its work is to produce energy.

"The Iranian nation will bloody the enemy's (the West's) nose if they want to violate an iota of our rights (to nuclear technology)," he said without elaborating.

The Security Council has imposed three rounds of sanctions on Iran for refusing council's demand to suspend its uranium enrichment activities, which can be used to make fuel for power plants or atomic bombs, if refined much further.

Iran ARTICLE CLAIMS IRAN HAS THE BOMB
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, February 06, 2010 (21:31:52) (84 reads)

“Iran has developed a nuclear warhead, according to an article in the German newspaper “Sueddeutsche Zeitung”. A foreigner alleged to have helped Iran towards developing nuclear weapons is from the former Soviet Union…The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has already mentioned the employment of a foreigner in the nuclear programme.

Quoting a new IAEA summary, the Suddeutsche said the scientist had previously worked in a Soviet nuclear weapons laboratory on advanced warheads. It said both western intelligence services and diplomats had confirmed the connection.

The newspaper added that Iran was trying to make a nuclear weapon small enough to fit into one of its Shahab 3 medium-range missiles and was designing a so-called two-point implosion system, which requires only two simultaneously exploding detonators to trigger a nuclear blast.

The former Soviet scientist was an expert on the high-speed cameras needed to test if both detonations were symmetrical, and had worked for Iran from the mid-1990s till 2000.

Iran Intelligence from Tehran Elevates Concern in the West
Posted by neverquit on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 (02:41:50) (104 reads)

The West has long been suspicous of Iran's nuclear program. SPIEGEL has obtained new documents on secret tests and leadership structures that call into question Tehran's claims to be exclusively interested in the peaceful use of the technology.

It was probably the last attempt to defuse the nuclear dispute with Tehran without having to turn to dramatic new sanctions or military action. The plan, devised at the White House in October, had Russian and Chinese support and came with the seal of approval of the US president. It was clearly a Barack Obama operation.

Under the plan, Iran would send a large share of its low enriched uranium abroad, all at once, for a period of one year, receiving internationally monitored quantities of nuclear fuel elements in return. It was a deal that provided benefits for all sides. The Iranians would have enough material for what they claim is their civilian nuclear program, as well as for scientific experiments, and the world could be assured that Tehran would not be left with enough fissile material for its secret domestic uranium enrichment program -- and for what the West assumes is the building of a nuclear bomb.

Iran IRAN AND KAZAKHSTAN MAKING DEALS?
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 (17:31:41) (149 reads)

Iran on Wednesday denied as "baseless" a report that it was close to clinching a deal to import 1,350 tons (1,372 tonnes) of purified uranium ore from Kazakhstan to restock its depleted reserves.

Any such deal would violate United Nations sanctions imposed on Iran in 2006 over its nuclear program. Uranium ore, also known as "yellow cake," can be enriched to use for fuel either for reactors or nuclear weapons.

The report by the Associated Press news agency cited an intelligence report by an unnamed member nation of the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

It said Iran was willing to pay $450 million for the uranium and that the clandestine deal, to be sealed with Kazakh state employees acting without the approval of the Kazakh government, could be completed within weeks.

"Such fabrications of news are part of the psychological warfare (against Iran) to serve the political interests of the hegemonic powers," Iran's representative at the United Nations said in a statement faxed to Reuters.

Iran IN IRAN, POSSIBLE VIOLENT REACTION TO PROTESTS
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Sunday, December 27, 2009 (16:45:42) (120 reads)

TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian security forces on Sunday shot and killed a nephew of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi during the fiercest clashes with anti-government protesters in months, a Mousavi aide said. At least four people died, according to opposition Web sites and witnesses.

Amateur video footage purportedly from the center of Tehran showed an enraged crowd carrying away one of the casualties, chanting, "I'll kill, I'll kill the one who killed my brother." In several locations in the center of the capital, demonstrators fought back furiously against security forces, hurling stones and setting their motorcycles, cars and vans ablaze, according to video footage and pro-reform Web sites.

Demonstrations also took place in at least three other cities.

A close aide to Mousavi, a presidential contender in a disputed June election, said the 35-year-old nephew, Ali Mousavi, died of injuries in a Tehran hospital. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals from the government.

Iran IRAN SEIZES IRAQI OIL FIELD
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Friday, December 18, 2009 (18:51:40) (137 reads)

BAGHDAD – Iranian troops have crossed into Iraqi territory and seized an oil well that lies in a disputed area along the two countries' southern border, Iraq's deputy foreign Minster said Friday.

The deputy minister, Mohammed Haj Mahmoud, said Iranian troops seized oil well No. 4 Thursday night in the al-Fakkah oil field, located about 200 miles (about 320 kilometers) southeast of Baghdad. The oil field is one of Iraq's largest.

Oil prices rose slightly after news of the incident.

"We are coordinating with the Oil Ministry regarding this issue. This is not the first time that the Iranians have tried to prevent Iraqis from investing in oil fields in border areas. Tomorrow, we might summon the Iranian ambassador to discuss this issue," Mahmoud told The Associated Press.

The al-Fakkah field is considered a shared field between Iran and Iraq, meaning both nations are able to pump oil from it, but the Iraqis consider oil well No. 4 theirs.

Iran IRAN LAUNCHES ANOTHER MISSILE TEST
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 (20:09:13) (162 reads)

Iran's hardline rulers sent uncompromising signals to foes at home and abroad on Wednesday, warning of possible legal action against opposition leaders and testing an upgraded missile that could reach Israel.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the launch of a Sejil 2 missile, with a range that could hit Israel, underlined the case for tougher sanctions over the major oil producer's disputed nuclear program.

"This is a matter of serious concern to the international community and it does make the case for us moving further on sanctions," Brown said in Copenhagen.

A senior Iranian energy official dismissed the latest effort to tighten the screw, saying a move by U.S. lawmakers to target the Middle Eastern state with fuel sanctions would not cause any problems because Tehran had many suppliers.

Iran IRAN MAKING MOVES
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Thursday, November 19, 2009 (02:18:08) (117 reads)

Iran will not send its partially enriched uranium abroad to be turned into material for medical research, its foreign minister said Wednesday, rejecting a key plank of a deal designed to ease international fears that Tehran aims to build nuclear weapons.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran might allow its nuclear material to be reprocessed inside Iran, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

The deal hammered out last month with the help of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency aimed to reduce the amount of raw material Iran has to build a nuclear bomb.

Tehran denies that it wants to do so, saying its nuclear program is to produce civilian nuclear energy and do medical work.

Iran SUICIDE BOMBER KILLS 30 IRG
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Sunday, October 18, 2009 (14:27:03) (144 reads)

A suicide bomber blew himself up at a meeting of the elite Revolutionary Guards in southeastern Iran Sunday, killing at least 30 people including top commanders and tribal leaders, a senior official said.

The attack took place in the city of Pisheen near the border with Pakistan in restive Sistan-Baluchestan province, which hosts a substantial Sunni population, local news agencies said.

Iran's parliament speaker said the United States was behind the attack while the Guards accused Western powers of carrying out the assault, the deadliest against them since a bombing in February 2007 in the same province killed 13 people. Related article: Iran Guards -- prestige target for rebels.

"Based on the latest information... between 30 to 35 people, including military officers, tribal leaders and local citizens, have been martyred in the attack," Mohammad Marziah, chief prosecutor in the Sistan-Baluchestan provincial capital Zahedan, was quoted as saying by ISNA news agency.

Iran IRAN DENIES UK ACCUSATIONS
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, October 17, 2009 (13:49:01) (170 reads)

An Iranian shipping company has dismissed a British allegation that its activities are linked to Tehran's sensitive atomic programme, the reformist Sarmayeh newspaper said on Saturday.

Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines claims it has not violated any rule or facilitated transport of consignments aimed at helping the nuclear programme, the report said.

On Monday, London said it had ordered financial companies to stop trade with IRISL as it transports "goods for both Iran's ballistic missile and nuclear programmes."

A company statement published by Sarmayeh said "IRISL has committed no violation of rules and regulations.

Iran UNCONFIRMED RUMOR ON THE INTERNET - IRAN
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 (00:20:23) (173 reads)

Yesterday afternoon at 2.15PM local time, Khamenei collapsed and was taken to his special clinic. Nobody – except his son and the doctors – has since been allowed to get near him. His official, but secret, status is: “in the hands of the gods”.

Reportedly this collapse is natural. Many would like him to move to his afterlife but reportedly the collapse was not ‘externally induced’ [no poisioning]. The few insiders who know about the collapse seethis development “as a gift from the gods”.

His condition had already seriously deteriorated over the last months, aggravated by his nervous condition due to [1] his inability to solve the problems created by his manipulation of the election results and the refusal of [a large part of] the population to accept this, plus [2] his loss of religious authority by means of the repeated condemnations of events by senior clerics.

Iran MORE TESTS FROM IRAN
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Monday, September 28, 2009 (13:37:11) (171 reads)

Iran on Monday test-fired long-range missiles it says could hit targets inside arch-foe Israel, as the defiant Revolutionary Guards staged war games amid tension with the West over Tehran's atomic drive.

The UN nuclear watchdog revealed on Friday that Tehran was building a second uranium enrichment plant, ratcheting up tensions with the West which suspects the Islamic republic wants to acquire atomic weapons, a charge it denies.

Guards' air force commander Hossein Salami said his men test-fired surface-to-surface Sejil and Shahab-3 long-range missiles on the second straight day of the manoeuvres.

"An improved version of Shahab-3 and the two-stage Sejil, powered by solid fuel, were fired," Salami was quoted as saying by state-owned Arabic language Al-Alam television.
