Iraq DOJ Persecution of Blackwater Slammed: Not Guilty!
Posted by OldBear on Saturday, January 02, 2010 (05:06:26) (159 reads)

PTL, PTL, TGA, PTL!!! (Just my 2c worth.)

The intersection scene of this encounter was quickly sanitized by the locals removing all the AK47 brass. WAY before any so-called investigators showed up. With a sanitized crime scene, and any local witnesses possibly favorable to BW properly threatened, the "investigators" charged that BW had maliciously, or at least recklessly, started shooting into a supposedly unarmed crowd where they claimed no threat had existed. We discussed this travesty as it developed years ago. BW had been the target of serious attacks all year, including the downing of a BW chopper shortly before this event. The BW guys in this encounter had care and keeping of VIP's and when they came under attack at the intersection they were not about to allow it to turn into another public butchering of their VIP's and themselves.
I'm sometimes encouraged with the wisdom of *some* our Judicial Officials such as, in this case, Judge Urbina. At least sometimes, justice does prevail.

A federal judge (...Judge Ricardo M. Urbina...) dismissed charges against five Blackwater Worldwide security guards accused of killing 14 Iraqi civilians in a controversial shooting in a busy Baghdad square two years ago in a ruling that sharply criticized the tactics of Justice Department prosecutors handling the case...
"In their zeal to bring charges," Urbina wrote in a 90-page opinion, "prosecutors and investigators aggressively sought out statements in the immediate aftermath of the shooting and in the subsequent investigation. In so doing, the government's trial team repeatedly disregarded the warnings of experienced, senior prosecutors, assigned to the case specifically to advise the trial team" on such matters.

Iraq TWIN CAR BOMBINGS IN IRAQ
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 (18:11:33) (174 reads)

Twin car bombings ripped through a Baghdad bus station killing 16 people on Wednesday, as violence across Iraq claimed at least 26 lives and shattered a relative lull marked by largely peaceful polls.

Shiite pilgrims travelling by foot to the central shrine city of Karbala, meanwhile, came under attack in two areas of Baghdad, leaving one devotee dead and 14 wounded, security officials said.

Defence and interior ministry officials said the parked cars blew up in almost simultaneous attacks near the bus station in the Shiite district of Bayah in western Baghdad. Most of the 16 dead and 43 wounded were men.

Iraqi police and US troops cordoned off the scene of the attack, a busy shopping area where blood and body parts were scattered across the streets, amid several burnt-out cars.

The force of the blasts blew the roofs off roadside stalls, leaving wreckage strewn across the streets which were filled with puddles from storms the previous day.

Iraq HISTORIC EVENT LARGELY UNREPORTED, NOT HYPED AS MAJOR STEP IN MIDDLE EAST
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, January 31, 2009 (18:54:42) (172 reads)

Millions of Iraqis voted in provincial elections on Saturday in a crucial test for a nation struggling to emerge from years of sectarian strife and to strengthen its fledgling democracy.

Security for the country's first ballot since 2005 was extremely tight with Iraqi police and military deployed in force as part of ramped-up measures aimed at preventing militant attacks and turnout was forecast to be high.

Only a few incidents of violence marred what was otherwise a peaceful vote which wrapped up at 1500 GMT, an hour later than planned.

About 15 million people were eligible to vote to elect councils in 14 of Iraq's 18 provinces. Results are expected to start rolling in on Tuesday.

Turnout is being closely watched, particularly among minority Sunni Arabs who massively boycotted the last parliamentary elections in 2005.

"This is a victory for all the Iraqis," Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said after casting his ballot in the highly-fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.

Iraq IRAQI PROVINICIAL ELECTIONS GO SMOOTHLY
Posted by Patriot on Saturday, January 31, 2009 (18:35:49) (192 reads)

BAGHDAD — Iraq's provincial elections have wrapped up without any reports of serious violence.

Polls closed at 6 p.m. (10 a.m. EST) on Saturday — an hour later than planned — after millions of voters cast ballots for influential regional councils around most of Iraq. There were no reports of major violence.

Iraqi authorities imposed a huge security operation around the country that included traffic bans in major cities and extensive checkpoints and surveillance posts. The U.S. military also was out in force but did not take a direct role in the election security.

Results from the elections are not expected before Tuesday.

Note: A REAL sign of progress for sure. It will be interesting to see what gains the Iranian backed Shia groups make though. ~Patriot

Iraq CRITICAL STEP FOR IRAQ
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Thursday, January 01, 2009 (16:26:42) (195 reads)

The United States on Thursday handed over security control of the Green Zone, symbol of the American-led occupation, to Iraq as a UN mandate for foreign troops ran out and bilateral military accords took effect.

Iraqi government and military officials hailed the return of the heavily fortified area in central Baghdad to Iraq's control in an emotional ceremony at the former palace of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.

"It is our right to consider this day the day of sovereignty and the beginning of the process of retrieving every inch of our nation's soil," Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said in an impassioned speech in a palace hall.

"The palace is the sign of Iraqi sovereignty and it is a message to all Iraqis that our sovereignty has returned," Maliki said as the Iraqi flag was hoisted at the palace entrance.

Maliki also declared the day a national holiday.

Iraq IRAQ SECURITY PACT
Posted by neverquit on Thursday, November 27, 2008 (17:29:31) (312 reads)

BAGHDAD – Iraq's parliament approved Thursday a security pact with the United States that lets American troops stay in the country for three more years — setting a clear timetable for a U.S. exit for the first time since the 2003 invasion.

The vote in favor of the pact was backed by the ruling coalition's Shiite and Kurdish blocs as well as the largest Sunni Arab bloc, which had demanded concessions for supporting the deal. The haggling among the political factions highlighted sectarian-based tensions that hinder reconciliation efforts, nearly six years after Saddam Hussein's ouster.

The Shiite bloc agreed to a Sunni demand that the pact be put to a referendum by July 30, meaning the deal must undergo an additional hurdle next year. It took nine months of difficult talks for U.S. and Iraqi negotiators to craft the agreement.

Under the agreement, U.S. forces will withdraw from Iraqi cities by June 30 and the entire country by Jan. 1, 2012. Iraq will have strict oversight over U.S. forces.

Iraq IRANIAN COMMANDO ARRESTED IN IRAQ
Posted by Patriot on Thursday, November 20, 2008 (14:15:13) (254 reads)

BAGHDAD (AFP) — Iraqi security forces have arrested an alleged "senior" Iranian commando from the elite Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force at Baghdad International Airport, the US military said Wednesday.

The military said they suspected the man of "involvement in facilitating Iranian weapons shipments into Iraq" under the cover of working for an organisation involved in the restoration of Iraqi religious sites.

Iraq MAIN STREAM MEDIA SILENT ON THE FACTS
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, July 12, 2008 (13:29:15) (239 reads)

American Intelligence has been all over this issue in our Forums from the very moment we saw Joe Wilson's politically motivated editorial in the NYT's. It should also be noted that the Wilson's have laughed all the way to the bank on this, with books, talk shows, and even a movie script offer.

In 2003 newspaper columnist Robert Novak wrote his now infamous "Mission to Niger" (published on July 14, 2003) in which he mentioned an allegedly failed attempt by Saddam Hussein to purchase uranium reported by the husband of a (not so) secret CIA agent, Valerie Plame, and mentioned her by name.

Mrs. Wilson's husband, former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, stated in a number of interviews and in subsequent writings (as listed in his 2004 memoir The Politics of Truth) that members of President George W. Bush's administration revealed Mrs. Wilson's covert status as retribution for his op-ed entitled "What I Didn't Find in Africa," published in The New York Times on July 6, 2003. In addition, after the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, Wilson wrote a series of other op-eds questioning the war's factual basis (See "Bibliography" in The Politics of Truth). In one of these op-eds published in the New York Times on July 6, 2003, Wilson says that, in the State of the Union Address, President George W. Bush misrepresented intelligence leading up to the invasion and thus misleadingly suggested that the Iraqi regime sought uranium to manufacture nuclear weapons.

After the initial Novak column, fueled by Democrats, a sycophantic news media proceeded to make the matter a public spectacle for years. A special investigator, Patrick Fitzgerald, was appointed to lead an investigation (which eventually would cost $2.58 million) and he convened a grand jury. Despite revelation to the special investigator that the actual leaker of the name of this secret CIA "operative" (Richard Armitage) in only a few days, Fitzgerald managed to keep the investigation going thereby extending his 15 minutes of fame for years. The CIA leak grand jury investigation did not result in the indictment or conviction of anyone for any crime in connection with the leak itself; however, I. Lewis Libby, Chief of Staff of Vice President Dick Cheney was indicted on five counts of obstruction of justice, perjury, and false statements to the grand jury and federal investigators on October 28, 2005( Libby resigned hours after the indictment).

Iraq IRAQI AIRSPACE BEING USED BY IDF?
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, July 12, 2008 (13:14:52) (213 reads)

Iraq denied on Friday reports claiming the Israeli Air Force has been practicing for a possible attack against Iran in its airspace.

"As the Ministry of Defense, we haven't observed any IAF warplanes practicing in Iraqi airspace," said Major-General Mohammad al-Askari, spokesman for the Iraqi Defense Ministry.

On Friday, sources in the Iraqi Defense Ministry told a local news network that Israel Air Force (IAF) war planes are practicing in Iraqi airspace and land on US airbases in the country as a preparation for a potential strike on Iran.

The IDF denied the reports, calling them "baseless."

Iraq YELLOWCAKE REMOVED FROM IRAQ
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Sunday, July 06, 2008 (03:04:25) (300 reads)

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

What's now left is the final and complicated push to clean up the remaining radioactive debris at the former Tuwaitha nuclear complex about 12 miles south of Baghdad — using teams that include Iraqi experts recently trained in the Chernobyl fallout zone in Ukraine.

"Everyone is very happy to have this safely out of Iraq," said a senior U.S. official who outlined the nearly three-month operation to The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

Note: Is Joe Wilson listening?

Iraq SADR BACKS DOWN, CSM SAYS IT'S 'TACTICAL'
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 (13:03:31) (280 reads)

AMARA, IRAQ - In recent months, Moqtada al-Sadr's forces have fiercely battled Iraqi and US troops in Basra and Sadr City. But this time, in the southern Iraqi city of Amara, the Shiite cleric ordered a tactical retreat.

A major Iraqi-US mission to clear Mr. Sadr's Mahdi Army out of one of its last supposed sanctuaries began here late last week but was met with no resistance.

Sadr – and his most trusted lieutenants, who visited Amara last week – called for restraint. He announced that an elite faction of his militia will still fight US troops while the rest would dedicate themselves to the betterment of society through peaceful means.

"This will preserve the [Mahdi] Army's pristine reputation and ensure that the resistance continues," said Sadr in a statement before the beginning of the operation, in effect altering the terms of an earlier freeze on the activities of his militia.

Note: The Christian Science Monitor just can't bring itself to say that the changing tactics of the US Military, combined with a growingly effective Iraqi Army/Police Force, and a disdain amongst the Iraqi populace for the terrorist tactics of the Mahdi Army are the most important factors in Sadr's decision making processes. Pitiful reporting.

Iraq CHANGING COMBAT TACTICS
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 (12:51:28) (287 reads)

US troops went from house to house on Wednesday in Baghdad's Shiite stronghold looking for bombs and arms ahead of an Iraqi army deployment in line with a new truce, witnesses and officials said.

Motorcycles and trucks were also subjected to searches by sniffer dogs before being allowed into the impoverished east Baghdad district of Sadr City, where anti-American Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has strong support.

Witnesses saw US tanks aiming their heavy weapons towards Sector Nine of Sadr City while the Americans carried out a tedious search procedure, questioning residents with the help of translators.

The operations were concentrated in the immediate neighbourhood of a wall the Americans have been building that cuts off one-third of Sadr City from the rest of the district.

Note: This is a testament to the ability of American Military Leadership changing their tactics over time. Flexibility and opportunity are the ways of the Warrior - and American Soldiers have always been able to find the way to win.

Iraq PRESSURE STILL ON MAHDI ARMY
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Sunday, May 11, 2008 (22:47:10) (240 reads)

US and Iraqi forces continue to strike at the Mahdi Army in Baghdad despite the agreement reached between the Iraqi government and the Mahdi Army late Friday. Seventeen Mahdi Army fighters were killed in northeastern Baghdad over the past 24 hours.

Nine of the Mahdi Army fighters killed were killed in Sadr City: four Mahdi fighters were killed by an air weapons team as they planted an explosively formed penetrator roadside bomb; three were killed as they attacked the barrier emplacement teams along Qods Street; and two were killed as they fired rockets. Five more Mahdi Army fighters were killed by air weapons teams in New Baghdad as they grouped for an attack, and three more were killed as they conducted attacks in Adhamiyah.

The cease-fire signed yesterday between the Sadrist movement, which runs the Mahdi Army, and the government of Iraq will not hinder the building of the concrete barrier or operations against the Mahdi Army, US military officials have stated.

Iraq SADR SAYS 'UNCLE'
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Sunday, May 11, 2008 (22:45:30) (233 reads)

BAGHDAD - Militants were withdrawing from the streets and shops were reopening in Baghdad's Sadr City on the first day of a cease-fire between Shiite extremists and U.S.-backed Iraqi forces following two months of intense clashes.

Authorities reported no violence Sunday.

"Today, people are very happy and very optimistic," said Sadiq Jaafar, a 30-year-old father. "Last night for the first time in more than 40 days we were able to sleep without being woken up by explosions or gunfire."

U.S. military officials said at a news conference Sunday that the Iraqi government was still working out details of the truce with elements of the Sadrist movement of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

"It is important to emphasize that it is an ongoing dialogue process," said U.S. military spokesman Rear Adm. Patrick Driscoll. "It is premature to say there is an agreed to truce."

Iraq IRAQ GOV'T: 100 AQ LEADERS HIDING IN IRAN
Posted by WhoDaresWins on Saturday, April 26, 2008 (16:46:23) (274 reads)

Baghdad, 23 April (AKI) - Iraq's national security advisor Muwafaq al-Rubei has claimed Iran is hosting 100 al-Qaeda leaders and members, some of whom are under house arrest.

"In Iran, there are many members of the terrorist organisation, that come from Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, North Africa or Yemen," said al-Rubei in an interview with pan-Arab daily al-Sharq al-Awsat on Wednesday.

According to the national security advisor, some al-Qaeda leaders have been jailed in Iran, while others are under house arrest.

But al-Rubei claimed those under house arrest still have access to a telephone that enables them to stay in contact with al-Qaeda cells in Iraq.

He also said Iraq has asked Iran for information regarding these people but have not received any response.
